Things to Do in Cetinje Montenegro 2026: Palaces, Monasteries & Lovćen

Cetinje rewards those who come for cultural depth rather than beaches. The former royal capital holds more museums per capita than anywhere else in Montenegro, plus the country’s most important monastery and the nation’s most visited landmark above - the Njegoš Mausoleum on Lovćen.

Visit the Royal Palace (State Museum)

The most important building in Cetinje. The former residence of the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty (Montenegro’s ruling house from 1696–1918), built in 1871, now houses the National History Museum covering Montenegrin statehood from medieval princely rule through to the unification with Yugoslavia in 1918.

The ground floor preserves some of the original royal furnishings and reception rooms. Upper floors hold weapons, maps, diplomatic correspondence, and personal artefacts of the royal family.

Explore Cetinje Monastery

The Serbian Orthodox monastery is the spiritual heart of Montenegro. Founded in 1484 (current building 1785), it holds the most significant religious relics in Montenegro: the alleged hand of St John the Baptist and a fragment of the True Cross, as well as relics of St Tryphon transferred from Kotor.

The monastery complex is open to visitors; the treasury (where the relics are kept) may have restricted access - enquire locally on arrival. Free entry; modest dress required (shoulders and knees covered). Allow 30–45 minutes.

The atmosphere is particularly striking during Orthodox religious holidays when services attract pilgrims from across Montenegro and the region.

Climb Lovćen to Njegoš Mausoleum

The peak of any Cetinje visit - literally. Mount Lovćen rises above the city and the Bay of Kotor, and on Jezerski Vrh (1,657 m), the second-highest peak, stands the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš: Montenegro’s greatest poet, prince-bishop, and national hero.

The mausoleum was designed by sculptor Ivan Meštrović and completed in 1974. Inside, a bronze figure of Njegoš reclines under a mosaic ceiling. The views from the terrace over the Bay of Kotor, Cetinje, and the Adriatic are among the best in the country.

Getting there:

• By car from Cetinje: 15–20 minutes, 9 km up a winding mountain road
• By taxi from Cetinje: approximately €20–30 return (negotiate return time with the driver)
• By guided tour from Kotor: most Kotor tour operators offer a combined Lovćen–Cetinje day trip

Visit the Blue Palace (Museum of History)

The Blue Palace (Plavi Dvorac) - a former residence of King Nikola I - houses the Museum of History, covering the period of Montenegro’s independent kingdom and its role in the Balkan Wars and WWI.

Walk the Former Embassy Boulevard

In its capital period, Cetinje hosted embassies from France, Austria, Italy, Britain, Russia, and Turkey - an impressive diplomatic footprint for a city of its size. The former legation buildings line Bulevar Crnogorskih junaka and are now used as schools and offices, but plaques identify each building’s original national embassy.

Visit the National Art Museum

The National Museum of Montenegro’s art collection is housed in Cetinje and covers Montenegrin painters from the 19th century through the Yugoslav period. Small but well-presented.

Hike in Lovćen National Park

For those with a full day and hiking boots, Lovćen National Park offers trails beyond the mausoleum:

Stirn Peak trail: Starting from Ivanova Korita (a plateau inside the park), this route gives longer ridge walking and views into both Montenegro’s interior and the Adriatic.

Forest trails around Ivanova Korita: More accessible, suitable for families, through beech and black pine forest.
