Things to Do in Herceg Novi Montenegro 2026: Fortresses, Beaches & Spa

Herceg Novi packs more activity into its small area than most Montenegrin coastal towns. From medieval fortress concerts to mineral spa treatments, it’s a stronger choice for an active stay than it appears at first glance.

Climb Kanli Kula (Bloody Tower)

The Ottoman-era fortress above the old town is Herceg Novi’s most atmospheric attraction. The name (“Bloody Tower”) reflects its use as a prison and execution site under Ottoman rule - the stone steps and deep-cut windows tell that story clearly.

Entry costs approximately €2 as of 2026. The 15-minute climb from the old town via steep stone steps is worth it: views from the ramparts extend over the old town, across the bay entrance, and south to the Croatian Pelješac peninsula on clear days.

From June to August, Kanli Kula hosts evening concerts in the courtyard - classical music, jazz, and Montenegrin folk. Tickets typically €10–20 as of 2026; check locally for the current programme. An excellent way to spend a summer evening in Herceg Novi.

Visit Forte Mare (Sea Fortress)

The lower fortress at the waterfront is Venetian-era (15th century), built to control the bay entrance. Entry approximately €2. The ramparts look directly into the bay at the point where it narrows from the open Adriatic - on the clearest days, you can see the Croatian coast across the water.

The fortress occasionally hosts summer events; check locally for current programming.

Walk the Belavista Promenade

The 1 km seafront promenade runs from the old town south toward the Topla area - palm trees, café tables, and views across the bay. Entry is free. The evening passeggiata (or korzo, as Montenegrins call it) runs from approximately 7–9pm and is the main social event of the day.

The promenade is accessible year-round and pleasant in any season. In winter, when most of the coast is quiet, it’s one of the few public spaces in Montenegro that retains some life on weekday mornings.

Visit Savina Monastery

A short walk east along the waterfront from the old town, Savina Monastery is a 16th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery with two churches in a walled garden. Entry is free.

The smaller, older church (Mala Savina) dates to the late medieval period; the larger 18th-century church is visually more impressive but less atmospheric. The cloistered garden is particularly peaceful on weekday mornings. Modest dress is required - shoulders and knees covered. Allow 30–45 minutes.

Explore the Old Town Streets

The old town of Herceg Novi is compact, car-free, and easily explored without a fixed itinerary. The main square (Trg Herceg Stjepana / Belavista Square) holds the Venetian clock tower (1667) and the best collection of café terraces.

From the square, stairs lead up to Kanli Kula and down to the promenade. Small streets branch off between. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a thorough exploration including the church of St Michael and the Ottoman clock tower.

Entry to all old town streets and squares is free.

Try the Igalo Mineral Spa

Three kilometres west of Herceg Novi, the Igalo Institute has operated since the 1950s as a centre for therapeutic mineral treatments. The local sea mud is rich in sulfurous minerals historically used for joint and skin conditions.

Day visits are possible without a multi-day package:

The town of Igalo itself is quiet and residential - the spa is the only reason to come. Combine with the Herceg Novi promenade walk for a half-day off the tourist trail.

Day Trips from Herceg Novi

Kotor

One hour by bus (€5) or approximately 45 minutes by car. Kotor is the other anchor of any Bay of Kotor visit - the UNESCO old town, the city walls, and Kotor Fortress above the city. Practical as a full-day round trip from Herceg Novi.

Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks

45 minutes by bus from Herceg Novi. Perast is the quietest and most refined town on the bay; Our Lady of the Rocks is the small artificial island with a baroque church that is the single most photographed image of the Bay of Kotor.

Dubrovnik (Croatia)

One hour by bus (€8–12) across the Neum corridor. Dubrovnik is easily manageable as a day trip, though most visitors prefer to stay at least one night given the city’s size. Note: the route crosses briefly into Bosnia and Herzegovina - passport required.

Budva

Approximately 1.5 hours southeast by bus. Montenegro’s main beach resort and nightlife centre. Full day.

Swimming and beaches

Herceg Novi’s own swimming is from concrete lidos and pebble beaches close to the promenade. The Žanjic and Mirišta beaches east of Herceg Novi (15–20 minutes by boat or local bus) are among the cleanest and clearest water on the bay’s western arm.

Meljine - a quieter pebble beach village 3 km east of Herceg Novi, accessible by local bus. More local in character than the town beaches.

The town also has a small Aquapark (seasonal, July–August only). Entry approximately €15–20 as of 2026.
