Žabljak is Montenegro’s outdoor capital. The activities here are different from the Adriatic coast - everything is driven by the Durmitor mountains, the Tara canyon, and the glacial lake landscape. Here is what to do and how to plan it.

Walk the Black Lake Loop

The signature Žabljak activity and the most accessible introduction to Durmitor. Black Lake (Crno jezero) consists of two glacial lakes connected by a stream - Malo jezero and Veliko jezero - set against black pine forest and the Meded peak above.

The marked loop around both lakes is 3.6 km and takes 1.5–2 hours at a comfortable pace. The path is flat, well-maintained, and suitable for all fitness levels. The lake entrance is 3 km from Žabljak town - walkable (45 minutes) or a 5-minute drive.

  • Best time: Early morning (6–8am in summer) for glassy water reflections and before the crowds arrive
  • Cost: Park entry fee approximately €3/person
  • Tip: Continue 30 minutes beyond the main loop to the Crno jezero ski area lookout for a view of the full lake from above

Raft the Tara River

The Tara River Canyon - at up to 1,300 m deep, the deepest canyon in Europe - provides the context for the classic Žabljak adventure activity.

The full-day rafting trip (approximately 18 km of river) is the standard format, run by operators in Žabljak and at Šćepan Polje on the canyon floor. The day includes:

  • Transfer to the river put-in (approximately 30–40 minutes from Žabljak)

  • 4–5 hours on the river (rapids, calm sections, canyon wall scenery)

  • Lunch at a riverside camp (traditionally roast lamb, bread, local wine)

  • Return transfer to Žabljak

  • Price: approximately €35–55 per person as of 2026 (full-day, includes lunch and gear)

  • Season: April–October; best flow for rapids in May–June

  • Difficulty: Grades II–IV depending on section and season

  • Booking: Arrange through accommodation in Žabljak or directly with operators; 1–2 days advance booking recommended July–August

Half-day options (shorter river section, morning only) are available for approximately €25–35.

Hike to Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m)

The full Durmitor mountain experience: Montenegro’s highest accessible peak, reached by a demanding but well-marked trail from Sedlo Pass.

  • Starting point: Sedlo Pass (approximately 13 km from Žabljak by car or arranged transport; no public bus)
  • Route: From Sedlo, the trail ascends via the Šareni Pasovi ridge and the upper karst plateau to the summit. The last section involves some scrambling on loose rock.
  • Distance: 14–16 km return from Sedlo
  • Duration: 6–8 hours return
  • Elevation gain: approximately 800–900 m from Sedlo to summit
  • Equipment: Hiking boots essential, 2+ L water, food, sun protection, warm layer (summit is 10°C+ cooler than base)
  • Season: July–September; snow persists above 2,000 m well into June

The summit view covers the Tara Canyon to the north, Bosnia’s mountains to the east, and the karst plateau to the south.

Drive the Durmitor Ring Road

A 37 km circuit through the national park by car, connecting the main viewpoints and trailheads without requiring long hikes.

Key stops:

  • Sedlo Pass (1,907 m): The highest point on the ring road; views across the Durmitor massif
  • Tara Canyon viewpoints: Several pull-offs above the canyon’s 1,300 m depth
  • Pištet cliff overlook: The most dramatic single viewpoint over the Tara gorge
  • Velika Kalica valley: A high alpine valley with grazing pastures and karst rock formations
  • Black Lake: Full circuit loop includes the lake on the return

Allow 3–4 hours for the full ring road with photo stops. The road is paved but narrow and steep in sections - suitable for standard cars in summer. Snow tyres required from October.

Explore Shorter Trails in the Park

For those who want more than the Black Lake loop but less than the Bobotov Kuk summit, Durmitor has several intermediate options:

Susica Canyon trail (3–4 hours): A canyon walk downstream from the park’s internal plateau - flat canyon base walking with dramatic walls above.

Zeleni Vir trail (2 hours): A walk to a green spring pool in the forest - short and beautiful, suitable for all ages.

Skakavica waterfall (1.5 hours): A seasonal waterfall at its most powerful in May–June after snowmelt. Accessible from the ring road.

Download a Durmitor trail map before entering the park - AllTrails and Maps.me both have coverage. Cellular signal is unreliable in the valleys.

Ski Savin Kuk

Durmitor’s ski area operates on the Savin Kuk section of the massif, with runs from 2,010 m to approximately 1,450 m. The ski area is modest by international standards but provides reliable snow conditions (typically December–March) and a strong local skiing culture.

  • Lift passes: Approximately €20/day as of 2026
  • Equipment rental: Available in Žabljak town; approximately €15–20/day
  • Runs: Mix of beginner, intermediate, and one advanced. Best for intermediate skiers.
  • Crowds: Busy on weekends with Serbian and Montenegrin domestic skiers; calmer on weekdays

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing

Beyond the ski resort, the Durmitor plateau and forest areas offer winter walking on snowshoes and cross-country skiing through old-growth forest. Equipment rental is available in Žabljak. No guide required for marked snowshoe trails near the Black Lake area.

Visit Đurđevića Tara Bridge

The 1937 concrete arch bridge over the Tara Canyon is one of the iconic images of Montenegro and was the highest road bridge in Europe at the time of its construction. Located approximately 20 km north of Žabljak on the way to the rafting put-in.

Entry to the bridge area is free; walking across takes 5–10 minutes. A popular spot for bungee jumping (operators active in summer; approximately €25–30 as of 2026).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the must-do activity in Žabljak?
The Black Lake walk and Tara River rafting are the two classic activities. The lake walk is doable by anyone (flat 3.6 km loop); the rafting is a full-day adventure from €35–55. If you can only do one: the rafting is more memorable.
How hard is the Bobotov Kuk hike?
Challenging - 14–16 km return from Sedlo Pass, 6–8 hours, with exposed ridge sections and some scrambling near the summit. Requires good fitness, hiking boots, and alpine conditions awareness. Not for beginners.
Can I raft the Tara River without experience?
Yes - the standard full-day sections include beginner-friendly stretches. Operators provide life jackets, helmets, and wet gear. The lower-grade sections (grade II) are suitable for families with children. Grade III–IV sections are for those who want proper rapids.
Is skiing good in Žabljak?
For a Montenegro ski resort, yes. Savin Kuk has vertical drop of around 560 m and caters well to intermediates and beginners. It's not a large resort by European standards but the snow conditions (1,400–2,000 m) are reliable in January and February.
