Things to Do in Zlatibor Serbia: Skiing, Hiking, Caves and More

Zlatibor has a wider activity range than most Serbian mountain resorts - skiing in winter, hiking and cycling in summer, and year-round access to caves, heritage railways, and the plateau’s arts and craft villages. Here is what to prioritise.

1. Skiing at Tornik (day pass approx. €30)

The Tornik ski area on Zlatibor’s highest peak (1,496m) has six prepared pistes - two beginner runs, three intermediate, and one more challenging black-rated descent - served by two ski lifts and a gondola. The ski school offers lessons in Serbian and English; group lessons run approximately €25 for 2 hours as of 2026. Equipment rental approximately €15–20 per day. The resort is 7 km from the town center; a seasonal shuttle bus connects the two in winter. Season typically runs December to March.

Off-piste, the plateau terrain around Tornik is open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing - no additional fee for moving through the meadows outside the groomed pistes.

2. Šargan Eight Vintage Railway (approx. €10 round trip)

The Šargan Eight is a 1925 narrow-gauge heritage railway in the Mokra Gora area, 20 km from Zlatibor. The track loops through the mountain terrain in a figure-eight pattern, gaining nearly 300 vertical metres through a series of spirals, tunnels, and stone viaducts. The round trip from Mokra Gora station takes approximately 1.5 hours. Tickets approximately €10 round trip as of 2026; available at the station. Departures are most frequent from May to September; check the schedule on arrival as times vary. Combine with Drvengrad for a full day out.

3. Mećavnik Film Village / Drvengrad (approx. €5)

Built by Serbian director Emir Kusturica for his 2004 film Life is a Miracle, Drvengrad is a working arts village constructed entirely from traditional Serbian timber architecture. It contains a cinema, a library, hotel rooms, and a café, all named after figures from Kusturica’s films and cultural references. The annual Küstendorf Film and Music Festival runs each January, drawing independent filmmakers from across Europe. A narrow-gauge train connects Drvengrad to Šargan Vitasi station, making it easy to combine with the Šargan Eight. Entry approximately €5 as of 2026; allow 2 hours for the village itself.

4. Stopića Cave (approx. €3)

A limestone cave 5 km southeast of Zlatibor town with one of the widest cave passages in Serbia - the main gallery is approximately 150m long and up to 50m wide. Guided tours depart every 45 minutes and last approximately 45 minutes. Entry approximately €3 as of 2026. Open daily April–October, weekends only November–March. Temperature inside maintains around 9°C year-round. No specific fitness required; the walking surface is prepared. Reachable by car in 10 minutes from town.

5. Gostilje Waterfall Hike (free)

A 12m waterfall in forest 14 km south of Zlatibor town. The walk from the car park to the falls takes approximately 20 minutes one-way on a well-marked trail. Free to visit. The area is quiet in spring and autumn; summer weekends see Serbian families stopping on the drive toward the coast. A cluster of roadside stalls sells local honey, kajmak, and dried herbs nearby. Allow 1.5 hours including the walk and stops.

6. Sirogojno Open-Air Village Museum (approx. €5)

Sirogojno is 12 km from Zlatibor town and preserves an ensemble of 19th-century Serbian mountain houses, barns, a schoolhouse, and a church in their original positions on a hillside. The site demonstrates how rural Zlatibor families lived before electrification. Alongside the museum, the Sirogojno woodcarving school and the Old Crafts cooperative sell hand-knitted woollen goods that became internationally known in the 1970s after Yugoslav designers exported the “Sirogojno style” to Europe. 7. Kayaking and SUP on Ribnica Lake (approx. €10/hr)

Ribnica Lake sits on the plateau edge 3 km from the town center. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available for hire from kiosks on the shore; approximately €10/hour as of 2026. The walk around the lake takes under an hour. Swimming is possible in summer. The lake is free to access; pay only if hiring equipment.

8. Horse Riding (approx. €20/hr)

Several stables operate on the plateau offering trail rides across the meadows at approximately €20 per hour as of 2026. For beginners, guided group rides on the flat terrain around the town are manageable with no experience. Longer half-day rides (approximately €40–60) cover more of the plateau toward the forested ridge. Ask at your accommodation for the nearest current operator - stables change season to season.

9. Zip Lines over the Valley (approx. €15/run)

A zip line complex operates above the Zlatibor valley with several lines of varying length and height. Runs cost approximately €15 each as of 2026; some operators sell a package of three lines for approximately €35. The longest line is over 400m. Open daily in summer; weekends only in shoulder season. Located approximately 3 km from town center.

10. Uvac Canyon Day Trip (approx. €30–50 including transport)

Uvac Canyon, approximately 80 km south of Zlatibor, is one of the most striking landscapes in Serbia. The Uvac River cuts deep meanders through pale limestone, creating an interlocking series of horseshoe bends visible from the canyon rim. A large griffon vulture colony - one of the most significant in the western Balkans - nests on the canyon walls. Boat tours depart from the Uvac visitor center and run approximately 2 hours on the water. 11. Cycling on the Plateau (hire approx. €10/day)

A popular route runs from town toward Sirogojno (12 km), with options to extend toward Gostilje. Mountain biking trails exist on the slopes toward Tornik; ask at hire shops for current trail conditions.

12. Traditional Woodcarving in Sirogojno

Sirogojno is the center of a woodcarving tradition that has been practiced in the Zlatibor region for generations. The cooperative adjacent to the open-air museum sells carved household items, furniture, and decorative pieces made by local craftspeople. Prices range from a few euros for small items to several hundred for larger pieces. The cooperative is open whenever the museum is open.

• The Šargan Eight timetable changes by season; check on arrival rather than planning around a fixed departure time.

• Drvengrad and the Šargan Eight are best done together as a single half-day; allow 4–5 hours total.
• Uvac Canyon is a full day: depart Zlatibor by 08:00 to make the first boat tour.
