Budva Carnival

The Budva Carnival is one of the most lively spring events on the Montenegrin coast, drawing more than 2,000 participants into the medieval old town over four days at the end of April and start of May. The event marks the opening of Budva’s tourism season with processions, music, and costumed crowds filling the stone lanes of the old town.

What happens during the carnival

The carnival revolves around street processions through Budva’s fortified old town, with participants in elaborate costumes from across Montenegro and neighbouring countries. Live music plays throughout — brass bands, folk ensembles, and DJ sets provide a continuous soundtrack. Dance performances take place in the main squares and along the waterfront promenade.

The costumed procession is the centrepiece of the event and typically draws the biggest crowds on the weekend. Onlookers line the narrow streets of the old town to watch the spectacle, which covers a route through the historic core and out to the sea walls.

Practical information

The carnival is a free, public event — no tickets are required to watch the processions and street performances. Some ticketed seated events or evening concerts may be organised separately; check the Visit Montenegro website for the year’s full programme.

Budva is accessible by bus from Podgorica (approximately 1.5 hours), Kotor (around 30 minutes), and from coastal towns further north. The old town is pedestrianised, so parking on carnival days requires leaving the car in one of the outer car parks and walking in.

Accommodation in Budva is easier to find in late April than in summer, but the carnival itself draws visitors from across the region, so booking ahead is still recommended. Prices are noticeably lower than peak season rates.

Tips for visitors

The old town’s streets become very crowded during the main procession hours — arriving early to secure a viewing spot along the route makes a significant difference. Wear comfortable shoes; the cobblestones are uneven. A light jacket is useful for the evenings, which can be cool in late April.

Families with children are a regular presence at the carnival, and the atmosphere is festive rather than rowdy. The event is a genuine local celebration as much as a tourist attraction.
