Kotor Art Festival

Kotor Art Festival uses the walled medieval city of Kotor as its primary venue, staging performances and exhibitions in the old town’s squares, courtyards, and historic buildings. Artists from more than 100 countries have participated over the festival’s history, making it one of the more internationally diverse cultural events on the Montenegrin coast.

Programme

The festival spans multiple disciplines: classical music, contemporary theatre, and visual arts all feature in the programme. Performances take place in outdoor and indoor settings within the old town’s walls — the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, the main square, and the town’s courtyards all serve as venues. The combination of Kotor’s medieval architecture and live performance is the defining quality of the experience.

July dates place the festival squarely within Kotor’s peak summer season, which means the old town is busy with visitors independent of the festival itself. The festival programme adds a layer of organised cultural activity to what is already one of the most visited sites in Montenegro.

Kotor is accessible by bus from Podgorica (approximately 1.5 hours), from Budva (around 30 minutes), and along the coastal road from the Croatian border. Parking in the old town area is limited — arriving on foot or by bus is more practical during peak season. Accommodation in Kotor’s old town itself is limited; most visitors stay in the wider municipality or in Budva.

Tips for visitors

The old town’s lanes are narrow and cobbled, and fill with people during summer evenings. Festival performances that take place in open squares give the best view without needing advance booking. For seated concerts in historic buildings, tickets go quickly — check the programme and book as soon as it is published.

Kotor in July is warm; temperatures regularly exceed 30C during the day but cool somewhat after sunset. Evening performances are the most comfortable for outdoor attendance.
