Split Summer Festival

The Split Summer Festival is a month-long performing arts season running from mid-July to mid-August in Split, Croatia’s second-largest city and a UNESCO-listed historic centre. The festival uses both the Croatian National Theatre building and several of Split’s outdoor venues — including spaces within and around Diocletian’s Palace — to stage a programme of opera, ballet, theatre, and concerts.

Programme

Opera is the flagship element of the Split Summer Festival, with productions from the Croatian National Theatre and visiting companies performed in the palace complex. The historic setting — Diocletian’s Palace dates to the 4th century and its peristyle square is one of the most intact Roman public spaces in existence — gives opera productions a backdrop that formal theatre buildings cannot replicate.

Ballet, drama, and orchestral concerts fill the rest of the programme across the month. The combination of indoor and outdoor venues means the programme continues regardless of weather, though outdoor performances are weather-dependent and subject to occasional rescheduling.

Individual tickets and programme information are available through the Croatian National Theatre in Split and the festival’s official channels. Opera productions typically draw the largest audience interest and should be booked early; other programme events have more available capacity. Prices vary by event and seating category.

Split is Croatia’s main transport hub for the Dalmatian coast. It has an international airport (Split Airport, approximately 25 kilometres from the city), a busy ferry terminal connecting to the islands and to Ancona, Italy, and bus connections from Zagreb (approximately 5 hours) and Dubrovnik (around 3 hours). The old town, where most festival venues are located, is pedestrianised and compact.

Tips for visitors

Attending an outdoor opera performance in Diocletian’s Palace is one of the singular performance experiences in the Balkans. Check the programme for open-air events specifically — they are typically the most atmospheric. Stone seating is common in historic outdoor venues; a thin cushion and a light wrap for the cooler part of the evening are practical preparations.

Split in July and August is extremely busy. Accommodation prices are at their annual peak; booking two to three months in advance is the realistic minimum. The old town fills with tourists throughout the day but becomes more local-feeling in the evenings, particularly on the Riva waterfront promenade.
