Rose fields in Bulgaria's Valley of the Roses near Kazanlak in full bloom

Bulgaria’s most famous annual celebration, the Kazanlak Rose Festival, runs from 5 to 7 June 2026 in the Valley of the Roses — and with the peak harvest period arriving in the coming days, this is the last realistic window to arrange logistics for those considering attendance.

The festival marks the height of the Rosa damascena harvest, a centuries-old industry that has made Bulgaria one of the world’s primary suppliers of rose oil for the perfume industry. Kazanlak has hosted organised festival events since 1903, and the core programme combines early morning field rituals, a grand parade through the city centre, folk music and dance performances, distillery visits, and rose-oil tastings.

The programme in detail

Dawn rose-picking on the Saturday and Sunday mornings (6 and 7 June) takes place in the villages of Enina and Kran, just outside Kazanlak. Pickers work in traditional costume accompanied by folk musicians, harvesting dew-wet petals before the heat of the day reduces the volatile oil content. These sessions fill quickly when organised through tour operators; independent access to the rose fields is not straightforward, and joining a guided group is the practical approach for most visitors.

The grand Sunday parade is the centrepiece of the city programme, featuring the rose queen, flower-covered floats, and traditional horo circle dances open to crowd participation. Evening concerts and bazaars continue through both Saturday and Sunday.

Practical travel notes

Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area in January 2025, meaning EU and Schengen passport holders no longer face passport checks at land borders from Romania, Greece or other member states. The closest major entry point is Sofia, with regular bus connections to Kazanlak taking approximately two and a half hours. Plovdiv, a closer base, is around 90 minutes by road and offers more mid-range accommodation options if Kazanlak itself is sold out.

Accommodation in Kazanlak typically books out months before the festival; if you have not already reserved, look at Plovdiv and surrounding towns instead. Entry to the city festival grounds is free. Guided rose-picking experiences with transport from Kazanlak typically cost between 30 and 60 BGN per person when booked through operators in Sofia or Plovdiv.
