    ohrid

Long-running classical music and arts festival set against the backdrop of Lake Ohrid and the city's UNESCO-listed monuments, with concerts at open-air venues throughout the old town.

Ohrid is North Macedonia’s most-visited destination — a UNESCO-listed lakeside town on the northeastern shore of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe (34 km long, 14 km wide, over 300 m deep). Often called the “Balkan Jerusalem” for its over 360 Orthodox churches and chapels built across centuries.

For visitors in 2026, Ohrid works as a 3–4 day stop combining Old Town strolls, lakeside relaxation, monastery visits, and day trips into the surrounding mountains.

Lake Ohrid basics

Lake Ohrid straddles the border with Albania — clear, cold, and home to endemic fish species found nowhere else. The town’s UNESCO listing covers both cultural heritage (churches, monasteries, ancient remains) and natural value (endemic species, mountain-lake landscape). It is one of the most photogenic settings in the Balkans.

Must-do sights

St John Kaneo Church (Sveti Jovan Kaneo) — the iconic small whitewashed church perched on a rocky cliff above the water. Ohrid’s most photographed landmark. Panoramic lake and city views. Best visited at sunset or early morning.

Ohrid Old Town and Old Bazaar — cobbled lanes, stone houses, small churches, and cafés spilling toward the lake promenade. A relaxed 1–2 hour walk, longer if you add food and coffee stops.

Tsar Samuel’s Fortress (Samuil’s Fortress) — hilltop ramparts above the Old Town with spectacular panoramic views. About 15–30 minutes uphill from the Old Town centre. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

Church of Saint Sophia — one of the most important medieval churches in North Macedonia, with Byzantine-style frescoes. Featured on a national banknote. Next to the Plaošnik archaeological site.

Ancient Theatre of Ohrid — a Hellenistic-period amphitheatre dating to around 200 BCE on the hillside above the Old Town. Walk through the stone-seating sections.

Bay of Bones — a unique pile-dweller-style archaeological museum built on wooden stilts over the lake. About 1–2 hours.

Ohrid Boardwalk — a modern wooden walkway running along the lakeshore from the Old Town toward Kaneo and Potpesh, with views of clear water and cafés along the way.

Boat trip to Saint Naum Monastery

One of the classic Ohrid experiences: a boat trip from the Old Town docks to Saint Naum Monastery, 30 km south on the Albanian border. The ride passes Vila Biljana (Tito’s former estate) and the Bay of Bones en route.

  • Time needed: 3–5 hours round-trip with time ashore at the monastery
  • Price: Roughly 200–400 MKD (≈€3.4–6.9) per person

National Park Galichica

Between Ohrid and Struga on the eastern side of the lake — forest and mountain-side trails with panoramic views over both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. Good for half-day hikes from Ohrid.

Where to stay

Old Town — best for walkability to sights, atmosphere, cobbled-street feel. Best areas: around St John Kaneo, the bazaar, and the lakefront promenade.

Sveti Stefan — 5–10 minutes’ drive from the Old Town, known for luxury villas and spa-style hotels with pools and lake views.

Lagadin / Peshtani — quieter lakeside area popular with groups and long-stay visitors, with villas and private pools.

Budget guesthouse beds start at 40–70 MKD (≈€0.7–1.2)/night; mid-range hotels 70–120 MKD (≈€1.2–2)/night; luxury villas 150–300+ MKD (≈€2.6–5.2+)/night.
