Upcoming Events in Bosnia & Herzegovina

  • Mostar Summer Fest

    mostar

Three-day summer music festival in the heart of Mostar at SC Kantarevac, with a mix of regional and international acts.

  • Sarajevo Film Festival

    sarajevo

Southeast Europe's premier film festival, screening competition and programme films across venues throughout the historic city of Sarajevo.

Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of the most underrated countries in the Balkans. Two cities — Sarajevo and Mostar — are anchors of almost every itinerary, but the country holds more than that: Kravica Waterfall, the Dervish tekke at Blagaj, the Pliva Lakes at Jajce, the canyon at Tara, and the Ottoman town of Počitelj reward travellers who push beyond the main routes.

The currency is the convertible mark (BAM or KM), fixed at approximately 1.95 BAM = 1 €. Bosnia is affordable by European standards: a backpacker budget runs around 85–110 BAM/day (≈44–57 €), a comfortable mid-range stay around 160–200 BAM/day (≈82–103 €).

Top Destinations

Sarajevo

The capital carries one of the densest layers of history of any Balkan city: Ottoman bazaars, Austro-Hungarian architecture, the 1914 assassination site of Franz Ferdinand, and vivid reminders of the 1992–1995 siege. Baščaršija is the old bazaar quarter; Trebević cable car reaches the mountain behind the city; the Sarajevo Tunnel museum is the most moving war-history site. Allow 2–3 days minimum.

Mostar

Mostar’s UNESCO-listed Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva River is one of the most photographed images in the Balkans. The bridge was destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt using original stones; watching divers leap from it into the turquoise river is a quintessential Mostar experience. The old bazaar, Ottoman mosques, and walkable old town make 1–2 days here easy to fill.

Blagaj

A short drive from Mostar: the Buna River bursts from a cliff face into a gorge, and a centuries-old Dervish tekke is built directly into the rock. One of the most visually distinctive sites in Bosnia. Best as a half-day trip from Mostar.

Kravica Waterfall

A broad cascade that drops into a turquoise pool — ideal in summer for swimming. Usually combined with Mostar, Blagaj, and Počitelj into a single-day itinerary from the coast or from Sarajevo.

Jajce and Pliva Lakes

Jajce’s old town sits above a dramatic waterfall in the city centre. The Pliva Lakes nearby are calm, turquoise, and dotted with old watermills. Best as a stop on the way north, or as a standalone overnight.

Trebinje

A compact, Adriatic-flavoured town in the south near Dubrovnik — quieter and less visited than Mostar, with a relaxed riverside café scene and a monastery above the city.

Višegrad

Known for the Great Bridge of Mehmed Paša Sokolović (UNESCO-listed) and the Andrić literary connection. A half-day stop on routes between Sarajevo and Belgrade.

Practical Tips

  • Language: Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian are mutually intelligible; English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
  • Currency: BAM is fixed at 1.95:1 to the euro. ATMs are common in Sarajevo and Mostar; carry cash for smaller towns and markets.
  • Religion and dress: Bosnia is predominantly Muslim in Sarajevo and Mostar. Dress modestly when entering mosques — covered shoulders and knees, head covering for women if requested.
  • Safety: Bosnia is safe for tourists. Landmine risk exists in remote rural areas away from established trails — stick to marked paths outside towns.
  • Tipping: Not obligatory, but rounding up or leaving 10% is appreciated in restaurants.
